I was at a time in my life where I felt reunited with my purpose and passion as a therapist and coach, yet something was still holding me back. Upon reflection, I realized it stemmed from a past experience where I thought I was pursuing something I was passionate about. However, I was really hiding behind another business because I didn’t feel confident enough in my abilities as a therapist. I was looking for an escape while still wanting to help others. I was looking to break free.

My Growth Journey while Hiding
Although I don’t regret the experience—it led to significant personal growth—by the end, I found myself burnt out. My thoughts, actions, and feelings became misaligned with my core values, even though the initial goal was to avoid burnout. Ironically, this experience taught me an invaluable lesson and ultimately brought me back into alignment. Now, my belief in myself is stronger, and people can see that in me.
The actions I get to take to grow my practice overlap with things I was doing before, but because those past actions were tied to a misaligned purpose, they created negative feelings that were holding me back. To release this baggage, I used a journal prompt to acknowledge it, break free from it, and determine what lessons to take forward.
Journal Prompt:
- Acknowledge the Baggage: What is holding you back? Reflect on a past experience where you felt disconnected from your true purpose. What thoughts, actions, or feelings didn’t align with your values?
- Break Up with It: What would it look like to let go of this baggage? How can you release the thoughts or feelings that no longer serve you?
- Take the Lessons Forward: What did this experience teach you? How can you use these lessons to align more closely with your true purpose moving forward? What actions will you take to continue growing?
